Brilliant analysis, Madelleine. We have a fine capacity to sift the urgent and important from out of the merely urgent. We don’t do busy tasks. We look at the next task on our important list or we log off and actually rest. We resist panic when something goes wrong (except if we’re significantly over-tired and wired and dysregulated… but chances are we already left before we get to that point). We don’t call pointless meetings. I’m sure there are lots of other skills and strengths too.

Great ones! And YES, we certainly don’t call pointless meetings — how much time we could save.

Thank you so much for this post, Madelleine. I have been very lucky and after 20 years my chronic pain has dimished enough that I can finally pursue my lifelong dream of having a job (with coworkers! 🤗), but I am so so scared of applying for jobs, because of my previous experience with getting rejected because of the many holes and other weirdness on my CV. This gave me the hope that I can turn it into something valuable and convince the right person to give me a chance when the time is right. 💛

Spot on! I think another strength is the ability to deal with the unknown, whatever that may be — whether it’s how you’re going to feel tomorrow, whether these new meds will work, or coping without a diagnosis. We are stronger than we know! Keep creating! (& i’m going to go listen to Salem right now :))

I like that you turn around the disadvantages to treasures. The danish expression “Rummelighed” is what I have learned, not to judge less afortunate people too soon. No one knows what troubles they are struggeling with under the surface.

I too have learnt ‘rummelighed’, it’s such an important quality to learn and not many people have it 😍

I am 20 and I just got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. It is something I have never actually experienced before , because growing up, I never got sick. And so when they said you have a chronic illness all I could do was just laugh. One thing I had to learn was to take my health very seriously while starting to get my nutrition in and start to exercise more to become the most healthiest version of myself. Now I'm about to turn 21 this june and it's going to be a year into my diagnosis. I feel like I transformed into the best version of myself even though it was tough at first I think I got the hang of it.

Also I really loved your story. Thank you.🥰

I’m so sorry to hear about your diagnosis, and it sounds like you’re doing everything you can to manage it really well. It’s tough going from abled to sick ❤️ I’m glad you’re finding your best self — I feel like I have too. And thank you for sharing!

I think one of our powers is also resilience. It may seem to others that we’re weak (and therefore not resilient), but in reality I think those of us who live this life know that no-one is more competent in retaining hope, faith, and drive in the face of obstacles. We know how to make adjustments, how to remain flexible in the “how” in completing tasks or goals. We are out of the box thinkers when things don’t go to plan.

I love this, and so agree 🥰

Resilience is such a big one. We have no idea just how resilient we can be as humans until we find ourselves chronically unwell.

These are such good points, actually! I’ve never thought of my chronic illnesses in terms of strengths. Thanks for giving me something to think about while I’m on medical leave and considering (well - have decided) to quite my job and have that dreaded CV gap!
